Parent Guidance & Support

We offer guidance and support for you (the parent) to feel more confident in being able to understand & support your child.

  • ABOUT THIS SERVICE

With all the conflicting information available for parents and caregivers, it is not unusual for parents to feel very 'confused' (especially in this day and age!), to know how to best understand, manage and support their child. Sessions aim to support parents/caregivers to gain a more comprehensive understanding of their child's profile and experienced difficulties in order to empower them to see the possibility of change.

Parent Guidance and Support Sessions are usually conducted online via Telehealth videoconferencing and is with parents only.

The service aims to assist parents and caregivers with the following:

    • Understanding the nature of concerns and Identifying any 'red flags' in development
    • Discussing what is/isn't considered adequate for the child's development or age
    • Supporting parents on how to manage their child's when they are emotionally distressed (whether they may have a confirmed diagnosis or not!) which can lead them to become uncooperative and more challenging to work with.
    • Providing a professional opinion as to what your child would benefit from (e.g. assessments, intervention)
    • Providing guidance regarding future direction (e.g. school readiness/ suitability)
    • Providing guidance regarding specific external therapies or support services your child may benefit from

By learning how to better understand and respond to their child, attend to and support their child's needs, this may likely lead to reduced behavioural challenges and improved relationship dynamics in the household.

  • WHY WORK WITH THE PARENT?

Working with parents/ caregivers directly is the most efficient way to assist children in their emotional development since the parent is generally with the child and is creating the environment around the child which therefore impacts their child's overall development.

Parent guidance and support does not mean that the parent is 'responsible' for the child's struggles and does not mean that the parent is 'to blame' but rather that the parent has the 'real power' to change anything.

  • WHAT DOES THE RESEARCH SAY?

Given children’s limitations in their brain development as well as limited experiences, they are likely to be ‘stuck’ at the early stages of emotional intelligence; lacking self awareness as well as self management, which therefore impacts their social awareness as well as ability to build positive relationships. Consequently, they usually need support to build their emotional skills.

Whilst the use of individualised programs that aim to build emotional regulation skills in kids have proven effective for some children, the research suggests that establishing a relational approach with a child usually produces best outcomes. In other words, working on improving the relationship and communication with the adults in the child's life.
